Study Aims

Guided by an innovative life course approach, HIV40 examines HIV risk and protective behavior in the transition from middle to older ages and the role of social context in shaping individual-level behaviors.

Aim 1: Examining Life Course Variation in HIV Risk and Protection:

  • Documenting the range of HIV risk and protective behaviors among adults 40+, and examining how and why these behaviors vary by gender and HIV serostatus at different stages of the transition to old age.
  • Examining longitudinal individual predictors of HIV risk and protective behaviors and HIV status.

Aim 2: Examining the Role of Context in Shaping HIV Risk and Protection:

  • Documenting the role of contexts such as the epidemiological context (with a high HIV and non-communicable disease burden) , as well as social contexts such as workplaces, households, communities and healthcare settings in promoting or undermining HIV risk and protective strategies, and examining variation in context effects by gender and HIV serostatus and at different stages of the transition to old ages.
  • Examining longitudinal contextual predictors of individual HIV risk and protective behaviors and HIV serostatus.
